Let's talk about Endometriosis!

Endometriosis affects 10% of women in the world. It's time to talk about it.

What is endometriosis?

L’endometriosis is a disease defined by the presence, outside the uterus, of fragments of uterine lining (endometrium) or endometrial tissue, comprising glands and stroma (tissue used to support, protect and connect nerves, blood vessels and lymphatics it contains).

After ovulation, the uterine lining thickens to prepare for possible implantation of a fertilized egg. In the absence of fertilization, menstruation occurs. In endometriosis, some endometrial cells migrate outside the uterus and settle on other organs in the abdomen, where they cause an inflammatory reaction and form lesions and scars.

Endometriosis lesions have the same characteristics as the uterine lining. They are therefore sensitive to ovarian hormones and with each menstrual cycle, they grow and bleed. This is why we call theestrogen-dependent disease endometriosis.

Endometriosis thus manifests itself in women of childbearing age (i.e. during the period of genital activity), sometimes from puberty and the first menstruation. It is a chronic disease that regresses at menopause.

What are the symptoms ?

The most common symptoms of endometriosis are:

  • Of the very painful premenstrual/menstrual cramps
  • Pain during or after sex
  • Painful stools and/or urination
  • Pain in the abdomen, lower back, or thighs, which often lasts throughout the cycle
  • Infertility
  • Abundant periods

If in doubt, talk to a healthcare professional.
